After taking last week off from posting the dev diary let me take a moment or two to recap. We have been looking at what makes roles, the WPA class component that correlates to the basic classes, cool. We started with a brief overview of the magic system and showed how fighters combos work.  This week we are going to see how Thieves stack up against fighter and the mage.

Being a thief is about a lot of things, sometimes you have to be the sneaky one, other times you have to be the talker and other times you have to be the precise one. All of that takes planning and planning takes preparation.

With that in mind Whack Pack Adventures give the thief a bag of tricks he or she can go to when things go wrong. Each thief gets a small pool of points they can use to make preparations for the day. As they level up they can be more prepared.

The areas a thief can make preparations in is governed by skills. During character creation thieves can permanently reduce their pool of points to by skills they are capable of being prepared in and each of those skills has a double handful of tricks they can prepare.

Now these preparations allow you to avoid failure, avoid the worst aspects of critical failure or on occasion get a bonus for your next roll after you fail. They also give allow you to hide equipment so well that it takes a truly keen-eyed guard to find it.

Thieves get to make two different types of preparations. Gear based and mental based. The mental preparations may be changed out daily but the gear based ones can only be changed out when you are in a large enough place to get the new gear or replace that which has worn out.

So there you have it, where fighters can bring the pain and casters can bring the magic, thieves are just less likely to fail and when they can still come out on top. Or to put it another way: Thieves in whack pack adventures are not the cold-blooded killers who know the exact best place to put a knife in everything from a man to a dragon so as to do the most damage. Instead they are Michael Weston.

Till next time stay Whacky
